Why your tongue looks yellow

Updated 2026-06-09 · Medical review pending

A yellow tongue is usually nothing to worry about. Most of the time it is an overgrowth of harmless bacteria along with dead cells building up between the bumps on your tongue, often because your mouth is dry. It clears with simple care, and only rarely does the color point somewhere more serious.

Here is what causes it, how to clear it, and the one situation where yellow means see a doctor. You can also scan your tongue and check whether it settles.

Tongue with a yellow coating
Yellow usually means bacteria and dead cells, often from a dry mouth.

Common causes

Yellow on the tongue usually comes from the same family of everyday reasons as a white coating, just a bit further along:

  • A dry mouth or breathing through your mouth, which lets bacteria build up
  • Light oral hygiene, especially not cleaning the tongue
  • Smoking, which stains and thickens the coating
  • Coffee and black tea
  • Some mouthwashes and a soft diet

In many cases a yellow tongue is simply an early stage of black hairy tongue, where the bumps grow longer and trap more color.

The one to take seriously

There is a clear exception. If the whites of your eyes or your skin also look yellow, that can be jaundice, which relates to the liver and needs medical attention promptly. The tell is that jaundice is not limited to the tongue. Yellow that sits only on the tongue, with normal eyes and skin, is almost always harmless.

How to clear it

For the everyday yellow coating:

  • Drink more water through the day
  • Brush your tongue or use a tongue scraper once a day
  • Keep up brushing and flossing
  • Cut back on smoking, coffee, and strong tea

Most yellow coatings fade within a week or two of better hydration and tongue cleaning.

When to see a doctor

Get checked if:

  • Your skin or the whites of your eyes also look yellow
  • The coating sticks around despite good hygiene and hydration
  • There is pain, a bad taste that will not shift, or a patch that will not wipe off
