You woke up with a row of itchy red bumps and you have two suspects: something in your bed, or one mosquito that got in. Bed bug bites or mosquito bites?
This page covers what each tends to look like, the clues in the pattern and the timing, how to check your bed for evidence, and what to do about the bites and the source.
Quick answer: Bed bug bites tend to appear in lines or tight clusters on skin that was uncovered in bed, often several at once, and many people react a day or more later. Mosquito bites tend to be puffy, scattered welts that itch within minutes, usually after time outdoors or one mosquito in the room. The pattern alone cannot prove bed bugs. Finding bugs, dark specks or shed skins on the mattress seams can.

Bed bug bites vs mosquito bites at a glance
| Bed bug bites | Mosquito bites | |
|---|---|---|
| Looks like | Small red, itchy bumps or welts, sometimes with a darker center or small blister | Puffy, round, pale or pink welt that rises within minutes |
| Where on the body | Skin uncovered during sleep: face, neck, arms, hands, shoulders, legs | Any exposed skin, outdoors at dusk and dawn or in a room with a mosquito |
| Itch or pain | Itchy, sometimes burning. Reaction may be delayed by a day or more, and some people barely react | Itches right away. Large swollen reactions happen, especially in children |
| Pattern and spread | Lines, zigzags or tight clusters. Many in one night. New ones keep coming | Single or a few, scattered. Each fades over a few days |
| Contagious? | The bites are not. The bugs spread between homes and items | No |
| Typical trigger | Bed bugs in the mattress, bed frame or nearby furniture | Mosquitoes, outdoors or indoors |
| What usually helps | Wash, cold compress, short hydrocortisone, plus pest control for the source | Wash, cold compress, short hydrocortisone or calamine, antihistamine for itch |

What bed bug bites look like
Bed bug bites are small, itchy red bumps, sometimes with a darker center or a tiny blister. On brown and Black skin they can look darker brown or purple, or only a little different from the skin around them, so feel for bumps as well as looking.
The pattern is the best clue. Bed bugs often bite several times in the same area, which leaves a short line, a zigzag or a tight cluster. They go for skin that is uncovered while you sleep: face, neck, arms, hands, shoulders and legs.
Timing is tricky. Many people react hours to a day or more after the bite, so the bumps seem to appear overnight or the next morning. Some people barely react at all, which is why one person in a bed can be covered in bites while the other has none.
Bed bugs are not known to spread disease. The bites usually clear without treatment, though scratching can cause infection.
You may have heard that bed bug bites come in threes: breakfast, lunch and dinner. It is a loose tendency, not a test. Bites in a line of any length, or a cluster, fit the same story.
What mosquito bites look like
A mosquito bite is a puffy, round welt, pale or pink on light skin, that rises within minutes and itches immediately. Some people, especially children, get a delayed bump a day later or a bigger swollen reaction.
The pattern is the opposite of the bed bug one. You usually have one bite or a few, scattered on exposed skin, with no neat rows. You can often name the evening, the camping trip or the buzzing in the dark. Each welt fades over a few days.
In some regions mosquitoes carry infections. A fever, severe headache or body aches after mosquito bites, especially after travel, is worth getting checked.
A third suspect is fleas. Flea bites tend to cluster around the ankles and lower legs with a tiny red center, usually in homes with pets.
How to tell them apart at home

Ask when you noticed. Itching within minutes of being outdoors points toward mosquitoes. Bumps you found on waking, after a night in bed, point toward bed bugs.
Look at the pattern. A line, zigzag or tight cluster leans bed bugs. A few scattered welts lean mosquitoes.
Look at where they are. Skin that was uncovered in bed leans bed bugs. Skin that was exposed outdoors leans mosquitoes.
Count the bitten. More than one person in the home with new bites leans bed bugs. A single person who was outside leans mosquitoes.
Inspect the bed. Pull back the sheet and check the mattress seams, the box spring, the headboard and the frame. Look for tiny, flat, reddish-brown insects about the size of an apple seed, dark specks, small rust-colored stains and shed skins. A musty smell can go with a larger problem.
Think about travel and secondhand items. A hotel stay, a used mattress or furniture, or luggage that sat on the floor is a common way bed bugs come home.
A skin pattern is a hint. Evidence in the bed is the answer.
What helps each, and when it backfires
Talk to a doctor or pharmacist before you start anything, especially in pregnancy, while breastfeeding, if you take other medicines, for babies and young children, or with kidney or liver disease.
For the bites (either kind):
- Wash with soap and water, then use a cold compress.
- Over-the-counter hydrocortisone 1 percent or calamine, for a short time.
- An oral antihistamine if the itch keeps you awake. Keep nails short.
For the source of bed bugs:
- A licensed pest control professional is usually needed.
- Wash and hot-dry bedding and clothing.
- Do not toss furniture in a panic, which can spread the bugs.
Where it backfires:
- Scratching. Broken skin can turn into infection, such as impetigo or cellulitis. Do not pop blisters.
- Bug bombs and random sprays. They can scatter bed bugs to new rooms.
- Treating only the skin. Creams ease the itch but the bites will keep coming until the source is dealt with.
- Strong steroid cream for long stretches. It thins skin. Use what a doctor prescribed, for as long as they said.
When to see a doctor
- Spreading redness, warmth, pus, red streaks or a fever, which can mean infection.
- Large swelling, big blisters, or bites that keep appearing for weeks.
- A fever, headache or body aches after mosquito bites, especially after travel.
- Bites on a baby.
- Hives all over, swelling of the lips or face, wheezing or dizziness. That is an emergency.
Bites keep appearing and you still don't know why? Upload a photo of the newest ones to see how the pattern compares with both. It is a comparison, not a diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions
Are these bed bug bites or mosquito bites?+
Look at the pattern and the timing. Lines, zigzags or tight clusters found after a night in bed, on skin that was uncovered, lean toward bed bugs. A few scattered, puffy welts that itched within minutes of being outdoors lean toward mosquitoes. Checking the mattress seams for bugs and dark specks is the most reliable step.
How do I tell bed bug bites from flea bites?+
Flea bites tend to cluster around the ankles and lower legs with a tiny red center, usually in homes with pets. Bed bug bites tend to appear on skin uncovered in bed, such as the face, neck and arms. Evidence in the bed or on a pet helps tell them apart.
Do bed bug bites always come in a line of three?+
No. The breakfast, lunch and dinner idea is only a loose tendency. Bed bug bites can be a line of any length, a zigzag, a cluster or a single bump.
Why do I have bites but my partner doesn't?+
People react differently. Some barely react to bed bug bites, and the reaction can be delayed by a day or more. Mosquitoes and fleas also pick favorites. It does not prove that nothing bit your partner.
How long do bed bug bites last?+
The NHS says they usually clear up on their own in a week or so, though itching can linger and scratching can slow healing. New bites keep appearing while bed bugs remain in the home.
Can you have bed bugs without getting bites?+
Yes. Some people have little or no skin reaction, so a home can have bed bugs without anyone noticing bites. Dark specks, rust-colored stains and shed skins on the mattress seams are other signs.
Do bed bugs spread disease?+
They are not known to spread disease, but scratching the bites can lead to a skin infection.
